For the fourth year in a row, thousands of people throughout the state have voted The Public Theatre the BEST THEATRE IN MAINE in the Down East Magazine readers’ poll. A banquet celebrating the 2016 “Best of Maine” winners was recently held in Portland and the Co-Artistic Directors of Lewiston/Auburn’s professional theatre proudly picked up their award.

Nationally recognized for its artistic excellence, The Public Theatre is a professional Equity theatre with a mission to produce Broadway quality theatre that is financially accessible to the general “public” of Maine – hence the name, The Public Theatre. The Public Theatre’s upcoming season is filled with exciting new plays, including three New England premieres by well respected playwrights. The 2016-17 season will open in October with the latest version of Last Gas, a sweet and thought-provoking comedy about love and last chances in Northern Maine by Tony Award nominee and Maine native John Cariani (author of Almost, Maine). November will feature national headlining comedians Karen Morgan (a runner-up for Nick at Nite’s “funniest mom” in America) and Jim Colliton performing in Lawn and Disorder, a hilarious evening of comedy about married life, guaranteed to make you forget about the dirty dishes in the sink. The Public Theatre’s acclaimed version of A Christmas Carol will delight families for the holidays. January offers a funny and thought-provoking look at the complicated relationship between parents and their children with the new play Under the Skin by Michael Hollinger. March will feature the hip romantic comedy Wrong for Each Other, written by Norm Foster, the author of last season’s record breaking hit,The Ladies Foursome, directed by two-time Tony Award winning actress Judith Ivey. The season will close in May with the New England premiere of the recent off-Broadway hit comedy Ripcord, about two widows waging war with each other over the most desirable room in a retirement home, by David Lindsay-Abaire the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Fuddy Meers and Good People.
